Despite the technological advances of electronic banking, Japan remains largely a cash based society. Credit cards can be used at most major hotels, restaurants and shops, but smaller ryokans and yakitori bars, will probably only accept cash payment. Fortunately Japan is a fairly safe country and most people carry around sizable amounts of cash.

Travelers cheques

Travelers cheques can be cashed at most, but not all banks.

ATMs

ATMs are also fairly troublesome in Japan. Only a few ATMs accept overseas credit cards. Citibank, Shinsei Bank and the post office accept Maestro and Plus cards. Just because an ATM has Visa stickers all over it doesn't mean it will accept your foreign card.

Post office ATMs close fairly early and even earlier on weekends and holidays. Citibank and Shinsei ATMs can be difficult to find outside of the major cities.
