Sukhothai literally means "Dawn of Happiness" and was founded in 1238. Sukhotahi was the first capital of Thailand and lasted for 120 years.
Places to see in Sukhothai
Sukhothai Historical Park
The ruins are 14 kilometers south of the "new city". The bus stop for the old city is just near the 7-11 near Garden House guest house. The bus is 20 baht and leaves every 15 minutes. The grounds for the various temples are quite expansive, so getting a bike is a good way to get around. You can rent a bike for around 20 baht. Admission is 40 baht for the main area and 150 baht for the whole area. Be sure to take a look at the impressive Wat Sichuan.

Sri Satchanali Historical Park
The city is considered to be Sukhothai's twin city and was the seat of Sukhothai's vice roys. Buses leave from the main bus station to Sri Sathanali. The fare is 38 baht. The city doesn't get so many tourists, so it is a pleasant place to spend a relaxing day.
Places to stay in Sukhothai
Garden House
This friendly guest house has rooms from 150 baht a night, with shared bathroom. 200 baht for a private bathrooom and some bungalows out the back. The have motorbikes and bicyles for rent and show movies in the evening.

Getting to Sukhothai
Government buses run to Bangkok in 7 hours, 255 baht, to Phitsanulok 45 baht 1 hour, and Chiang Mai 6 hours 234 baht.
